Day 58 – Plitvice Lakes National Park

We woke up early to catch a bus to the National park. We arrived around 10 am and found a hotel right outside of the park which was quite affordable, despite its prime location and awesome view over one of the lakes. We dropped off our stuff and set out to hike route H. This was the route recommended to us by the staff- the best route to see all of the highlights of the park in one day. We took a trolley halfway up the lake complex (there were trollies and ferries included in the price of the entrance ticket). From there we set off hiking down awesome wooden planked trails which twisted through the forest, over streams and waterfalls, and alongside the different lakes. The views were absolutely breathtaking and the weather was perfect. We found ourselves in heart of autumn, with leaves falling all around us. We encountered a woman hiking on the same trail as us in high heels; we were incredulous (we later read that Croatians care very much about their attire, so maybe this helps explain?). The views just kept getting better as we walked. The water was a vibrant blue-green and the trees were displaying a complete spectrum of fall colors. Needless to say, it was awesome.
For dinner, we ate at the hotel restaurant. The food was good but there were fruit flies intruding on our meal. We ate it anyway.
